When it comes to the end of your tenancy, there is so much going on that it can be hard to really know what to do and when! The fact of the matter is that you need to get everything out of the house, and have the place looking spotless before you hand the keys over. In most tenancy agreements, there are clauses that state that you need to get the place professionally cleaned, but many decide to go against that and clean the place themselves. This can make sense if the house or flat is a small one, but in many situations it can be a case of biting off more than you can chew, simply because of the sheer amount of things that need to happen before you move out! Either way, a few pointers in the right direction will be a good way to start on the right foot.
End of tenancy cleaning needs to be the last thing that happens before you hand your keys over. The process of moving house is a messy one, though it may not seem like it when you consider it beforehand. The amount of dirt and dust that accumulates under furniture, combined with the rubbish that you will find all over the place, that needs to be gotten rid of will find its way all over the property. So, if you had cleaned beforehand, then all your hard work would be undone! There will often be painting and filling to do around the place, if you had put up shelves or pictures, and this is extremely messy as well. Filler needs sanding down, and that fine dust will get everywhere, so as you can imagine, it is absolutely pointless to try and clean before all this has to happen. Once all of the furniture has been removed, the place is a lot quicker to clean anyway, as you are basically cleaning a large series of boxes! Half of the time and effort spent cleaning the house will be in getting in and around all of the furniture, so with all of that gone, the job is a much easier one.
So, you have a choice to make. Do you do all of your moving and shifting, DIY and getting the place ready, and then clean at the last minute, or do you get a professional cleaner in? The fact of the matter is that once all of these things have been done, the cleaning should not be that big of a job, but it does come at a time when you will likely be needed elsewhere, at your new place for example! Given that the cleaning is easier when the house is empty, you may think it pointless to be spending cash on a cleaner, when you can do it yourself so effectively, but on the other hand, a cleaner will be a lot cheaper than usual in this sort of situation, given that it will take much less time. Basically you have to weigh up the value of your own time and effort!
There is one final point to consider. If your tenancy agreement says that you have to get the place professionally cleaned, then what happens if you do it yourself, and the landlord is not happy with it? You’ll be charged for a professional clean, alongside having worked to get it done yourself! If you have had the place cleaned by a cleaning company, then you will be able to get a receipt for the job… So why risk it?
